Imagination plays a large part in history and in Belize the Crystal Skull of Lubantunn is such a mystery, also known locally as the Belize Skull. In history it is noted that every discovery begins with a search for the unknown; an unknown only known to us through books and folklore.

Belize is known as the heart of the Mayan civilization for its abundance of Mayan temples and artifacts found all over Belize. The once great Maya civilization is said to have started as early as 500 B.C. with its mysterious decline in 900 A.D. Despite the decline of this great civilization a great number of Maya descendants can be found in Belize, including the continuing discovery of Maya temples.

The Belize Skull at Lubantuun

The Maya temple of Lubantuun is found in the Toledo district in Southern Belize, amidst the natural jungle. The nameLubantuun is translated from the modern Maya language meaning “place of the fallen rocks”. Traveling to Lubantuun can seem as a long journey, but the magic felt in this once known ceremonial center is unique to each. Unique to Lubantuun is its lack of carved stele, and its solid structures leaving no room for doorways.
