BELIZE AIRPORT OPENING POSTPONED FOR AT LEAST 14 DAYS

Belize had covid-1919 under control until late last week.  Unfortunately, there has been a surge in covid-19 cases over the past few days.  Ambergris Caye and three villages in Orange Walk District are now under quarantine – no one is allowed in or out.

The Ministry of Health confirmed a number of new cases bringing the total number of active cases to 120.  Most of these cases are in San Pedro (76) in Ambergris Caye where three clusters were identified.   Contract tracing is underway.  The Ministry says the source of these current infections is unclear.

COVID-19 READY FOR INTERNATIONAL VISITORS

Opening of the Belize International Airport is less than a month away and Splash is getting ready to receive international visitors.  In addition to making the necessary preparations for protecting our guests and crew, we are continuing diving and snorkeling tours and dive training.  Today we celebrate Women’s Dive Day and we have several students doing the PADI Open Water course!  While we have set up our dive center and boats to be able to observe social distancing, we had a short relapse today to get everyone into the photo.

BELIZE AIRPORT OPENING AUGUST 15

Prime Minister Dean Barrow announced that the Belize International Airport will open on August 15 as Phase Three of five phases. In the near term, entry will be very closely controlled to minimize the potential spread of covid-19.

Airport arrival procedures will include health screening.  Accommodation choices will be limited to hotels and resorts that have received the Gold Standard Certification.  The first ones to open are those that can provide airport pickup and drop off, isolated tours and in-house restaurants.

SPLASH IS COVID-19 READY

We will be doing a dive trip tomorrow to Silk Cayes and to checkout our policies and procedures in this covid-19 world.  Our equipment has all been disinfected, all surfaces sanitized, and we are ready to go.  The objective of our updated procedures is to protect the safety and health of our guests and employees.  The main components are wearing of masks, social distancing and clean/disinfect/sanitize.

NOT WHETHER TO OPEN BELIZE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT BUT WHEN TO OPEN?

Pressure is increasing to open the Belize International Airport, but Belize continues its firm continuation of the State of Emergency though to the end of this month.  Any decision on relaxing the State of Emergency must be approved by The National Oversight Committee which is co-chaired by the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition.
