Happy Garifuna Settlement Day 2015!

The Garinagu, are valiant fighters who today continue to practice their cultural values within the land they occupy. These are people who have triumphed in history and their celebration is grandiose. The Garinagu are the descendants of Carib, Arawak and West African people who lived in the Lesser Antilles, especially St. Vicent.

The Garinagu arrived in Belize in 1802 and settled in Southern Belize. The historic activist, Thomas Vincent Ramos, cannot be overlooked, as he disputed for the rights of African-descent people in Belize. Falling in ‘Love with a Belize Honeymoon’!

Little did I know that twenty years later I would be returning to the tiny paradise were Mark (my husband) and I spent our Belize honeymoon.  Despite the many changes I see now, mostly for the better, I still remember my first trip back in 1992 as if though it was merely a year ago.  We spent most of that one week vacation in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye at Victoria House.  The entire experience was magical. Coming from Chicago, a honeymoon in the tropics is quite a treat.

Silk Cayes, along with the Gladden Spit, was declared as a Marine Reserve in May 2000. Since 2003, this reserve has been established as a no take zone, a conch restoration zone, a whale shark and reef – fish […]

The Joy of Kriol with a Belize Christmas Vacation in Placencia!

Despite the cultural differences in “Christmas” beliefs and traditions the common denominator is the spirit of love, of caring, of giving.  A time when we rekindle our humanity, strengthen our resolve to change our ways and maybe even the world.  But most undeniably is the warmth of love at Christmas time.  Kriol Christmas […]
