Placencia Outer Reef snuba and snorkelling sites on our day trips to the Belize Barrier reef system
The Belize great Barrier reef, as would be expected from the longest barrier reef in the western hemisphere (185 miles long) offers many snorkel and snuba sites to explore, and all accessible within a day trip. In Southern Belize, Gladden Spit and Silk Cayes and South Water Caye are marine reserves to protect the outer reef and cayes and have an abundance of aquatic life, fish stocks, coral reef biodiversity and healthy corals. One of the Splash boats leaves almost every day from Placencia at 9:00 am for the 40 to 60 minute ride to adventure on the outer reef, making this a day trip and excursion to remember. The most popular destination for our snorkelers and snuba participants are the Silk Cayes. Mid day we serve lunch, Belizean style on the boat or either a Belizean picnic or barbecue on the beach depending on the destination.

Silk Cayes
Pompion and Ranguna are a few of the outer reef snorkel and snuba sites located at the Silk Cayes marine reserve. Here snorkelers and snuba divers are likely to see huge lobsters, cleaner shrimp, arrow crabs, snapper, barracuda and lots and lots of colorful reef fish, and our professional and expert guides, registered with the Belizean Tourist Operators, are on hand to show this amazing aquatic life. Silk Cayes are beautiful small coral islands ranging in size from a half to 4 acres. Silk Cayes have beautiful beaches with restroom facilities, barbeque pits and picnic tables which make them perfect sites for a fun filled adventure day trip, and can be enjoyed by the whole family.

South Water Caye
South Water Caye is another Belize Marine Reserve protecting the marine and reef environments which makes for an excellent snorkelling trip and snuba experience. South Water Caye is an inhabited island 24 nautical miles north-east of Placencia and the boat ride takes about 1 hour and thirty minutes.
Attractions include spotted eagle and southern stingrays and nurse sharks in the sandy bottom, spiny lobsters, huge spider crabs, spotted eels, turtles, schools of tarpon and a wide variety of colorful tropical reef fish thriving around healthy coral.
Enjoy a Belize style picnic lunch or a barbecue and relax on the beach before heading back into the water for some exploration. There are lots of areas to check out before heading back to Placencia.
