A typical Belizean when asked what is their favorite dish will almost always regardless of culture or ethnicity respond: rice and beans, stew chicken, and potato salad. Yes, this dish often made with rich coconut milk can be found on the lunch menu at any restaurant in Belize. However, Belize is a melting pot and its food is a direct reflection of the many cultures living in Belize.

On November 19th, the well-known and historical Garinagu celebrates its culture. Belize is known as the land of immigrants, as many people found refuge in this beautiful land and made it their home. Novemeber 19th 2014 is known as Garifuna Settlement Day, marking the arrival of the first Garinagu to Belize by dory (dugout canoe).

However, the celebration is not a one-day event but is celebrated the entire week with music festival and pageants.  On Novemeber 19, in the early morning communities like Dangriga and Punta Gorda reenact the arrival of its people by a dory floating ashore, symbolizing the historical celebration. The women and men all await the arrival of the dory dressed in their colorful traditional Garifuna attire. After this event a special traditional Garifuna mass follows and all are welcome to attend.

The Garifuna culture is a unique and vibrant culture in Belize and the pride that exist within the Afro-Caribbean group is a direct representation of the struggles the people have endured in their past. The Garifuna traditions continue to be emulated from generation to generation: its food, its people, its music, its language, and its art are all a part of the Garifuna heritage.
