While the country wide Statute declaring a State of Emergency stays in place until the 30 June, the country is cautiously opening up.  The possibility of a second wave is a concern.

The adult curfew from 8:00 pm to 5:00 am and to 6:00 am for minors is still in place, by law everyone must wear masks in public places, and social distancing of 6 feet must be practiced.  These regulations are strongly enforced by the police.

The border remains closed.  Caution remains the catchword as Belize’s neighbors have active covid-19 cases.  Belize has had 18 confirmed cases with 2 deaths and 16 recoveries and no new cases for over 3 weeks

Most businesses are now open.  Barber and salon services are by appointment only with max 2 customers in the establishment and while hotels are open but not their restaurants.  Restaurants can serve take out only.  Casinos, gymnasiums, spas, sporting complexes, discotheques, bars and night clubs remain closed.

How was Belize able to achieve no active cases so quickly?

Quick response – The border was closed on March 23 when the first case of covid-19 was detected and contact tracing initiated immediately

Ruthless enforcement of State of Emergency regulations – Hundreds of arrests with fines of up to $5000.00 fines or jail time.  A Belizean family of 4 crossed the border into Belize and the parents are now in jail.

Education – the Prime Minister kept Belizeans informed of new legislation and the Attorney General provided clear and complete explanation of the state of the regulations.  The Ministry of Health provided regular updates on Facebook and the public could ask question and get answers on these updates.

All of this is taking an economic toll on Belizeans, particularly the tourism sector.  When the international airport will open is still a question, so tourism is temporarily on hold. The rapid and competent handling the covid-19 pandemic in Belize makes Belize as the destination of choice for tourist once this pandemic is behind us.

Belize – both healthy and pristine.

Social distancing is a practical way of life Belize with the lowest population density in Central America!  The population of Belize is less than 400 000!  So many of our guests have been amazed at the panorama they view flying from Belize International Airport – miles and miles of green forest.  It almost seems as though the county in empty.

We are looking forward to the day when you will be able to join us to experience the wonders of Belize.  We will be here waiting for you.
