The Mayas of Belize traditions and culture continue to be prominent in Belize today. What most people do not know is that Belize has the perfect climate and soil for the natural harvesting of cocoa. The harvesting of cocoa is done by a few in the Toledo district, who complete the magical art of refining the cocoa to caco to manufacturing the sweet and natural taste of chocolate.

Belize’s chocolates do not contain preservatives but are made of simple natural spices. The process of breaking down the cocoa beans, usually done by machine are done by hand in Belize by small family owned manufacturers. When visiting Belize there is nothing more invigorating than heading to the south of the country and touring one of the local chocolate plants. Many of the local chocolate plants offer tours year-round, with the opportunity of creating your own chocolate bar.

Located in the heart of Southern Belize are three known establishments who harvest and produce cocoa products: Ix-Cacao, Cotton Tree Chocolates, and Goss Chocolate. If you are out in the islands you can visit one of the newest chocolate factory located on San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Kakaw Chocolates. These chocolates are made with pure, natural Toledo Cacao.
