The Easter Holiday in Belize is a blend of Christian holiday that extends over a four-day holiday weekend. The Easter Holiday is referred to as Holy Week (Semana Santa). During this week the  suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ is observed. Traditionally Holy week begins on Palm Sunday for Catholics. However, in Belize the public and bank holiday begins on Good Friday through to Easter Monday. During this week Catholics follow many traditions such as processions and special mass. Holy Week in Belize commemorates a host of traditions especially observed in Benque Del Carmen, Cayo District.

In Benque Viejo del Carmen creative and colorful sawdust tapestries are created most symbolizing the Passion of Christ. These tapestries are layed out of the route of the procession. The most popular event for Catholics is the reenactment drama of the Passion of Jesus Christ. This event is a beautiful dramatization of faith within the community. The individuals chosen to participate are honored to do so and take pride in their belief.
