Despite its small size and seemingly marginal location, Altun Ha was an ancient Maya community of great complexity and wealth. It was an important link in the coastal trade routes, and had contact with many other important Maya cities.

Altun Ha was a major ceremonial center occupied during the Classic Period. The name “Altun Ha” literally means “rockstone water” which is a rough translation of the name of a nearby village, Rosckstone Pond.  Today this site is visited by many tourists and has been the inspiration for many. The only beer made and bottled in Belize, Belikin beer uses the temple as their official label. In addition, the Belizean bank notes also depict the beauty of Altun Ha.
